Message from Mr. Mahendra Kanhai, Head of Electrical Engineering Department

Welcome to your new home!

Mr. Mahendra Kanhai, Head of Electrical Engineering Department

I am pleased to welcome you to the Department of Electrical Engineering and to offer information about our programmes.

The field of Electrical Engineering deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. The field has grown rapidly and covers many diverse areas including electronics engineering, digital computers, power engineering, telecommunications, control systems, radio-frequency engineering, signal processing, instrumentation, and microelectronics. The profession is guided and strongly supported by the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE). Like every other country, Guyana requires a well-trained cadre of Electrical Engineers to work in a very wide range of industries ranging from basic circuit theory and maintenance to the management skills required of project managers. The maintenance of a continuous supply of electricity is a demanding task that predominantly requires dedicated Electrical Engineers. It is our hope that you will one day fill those important roles and hence contribute significantly to National Development.

The Electrical Engineering programmes at the University of Guyana have now been strengthened and modified to include an awareness of the indigenous diversities of Guyana and the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS). The programmes have been redesigned to align with the requirements of international accreditation bodies and are now on par with those offered by the best universities in the world. Classwork for the large majority of courses is augmented by laboratory exercises using recently-acquired, modernised equipment. The learning experience of students is further enhanced by the use of a number of software including Multisim, PSPICE, Powerworld and MATLAB. The programmes consist of a 2-year Associate of Science option and a 5-year Bachelor of Science option. The latter includes a ten-month stint of Industrial Attachment. The Associate of Science – Electrical Engineering provides courses that form the foundation of Electrical Engineering whereas the Bachelor of Science – Electrical Engineering offers more in-depth study of the various core areas.

I trust your stay will be fruitful and rewarding. You have chosen a field that is dynamic, constantly evolving and one that features cutting-edge technology. I wish you all the best.

Best Regards,
Mr. Mahendra Kanhai
Head of Electrical Engineering Department
