About The Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers training to technician level in the Associate Degree programme and to technologist level in the B Eng. Degree programme. Both programmes are each of two years duration. After completion of the Associate Degree programme, students can go on to the B Eng. Degree programme once they have obtained a pass with a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or above. However, the B Eng. Is now being phased out, to be replaced by the Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering for the Academic Year 2017/18.

Potential areas for mechanical engineering

Associate of Science Degree - The aim of this programme is to train the student in the basic skills of general Mechanical Engineering both theoretically and practically. Armed with this basic knowledge a graduate will be able to adapt himself to any mechanical area in industry where he is placed, and function effectively as a Mechanical Engineering Technician. A management course in the second year also equips the student with basic management skills. He/she also does a Maintenance Engineering Course.

B Eng. Degree in Mechanical Engineering - This programme furthers the theoretical knowledge of Diplomates in Mechanical Engineering and strengthens their management capabilities, to a pre-professional level. The higher level of study encountered here will enable graduates to effectively understand, run, maintain and manage all types of industrial plants, machinery and equipment after undergoing a period of in-house training and familiarisation at their work place. It also equips graduates with the tools and knowledge to design and test various types of machinery and systems, and to undertake independent research and development in the mechanical engineering arena.

Aviation Management

Aviation contributes to the socio-economic and cultural development of nations and can be used as a key driver for sustainable national development in Guyana. Over the last decade, the industry has grown over a hundred per cent. Despite this, except for the specialised areas, such as piloting, aircraft maintenance engineering and air traffic control, there is no programme available in Guyana to provide a holistic understanding of this fast-paced industry. The Programme in Aviation Management is designed to provide the practitioners in the aviation industry with the knowledge and understanding in key areas to engender better decision making in assuring the future of the industry.

Department of Airline & Aviation Management - Winchester City ...

The University of Guyana in collaboration with Aviation Industry and in the consultation with Guyana Civil Aviation Authorities has developed a Programme in Aviation Management in response to an identified Aviation Industry need.

This Bachelor of Science programme is a follow-on from the Certificate and Associate of Science in Aviation Management programmes where students are required to do two years comprising of 72 credits in order to satisfy the registration for Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management. The Certificate and Associate of Science programmes are one-year duration each and are foundation programmes for the Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management.

 Programme Duration:

This Programme will be offered over two academic years using a part-time model. Each candidate is expected to complete and pass a total of 57 credits in order to be awarded the certificate. Candidates must obtain a minimum GPA of 2.0 to be eligible for graduation. Re-sit examinations will be allowed for up to two failed courses only at the end of each year. Seventy-two credits will be transferred from the Certificate and Associate Degree.
